Congratulations on your new Puppy
Giving a new puppy a home will bring you rewards and special responsibility. We would like to take the opportunity to welcome you and your new arrival to My Pets Vets. We hope to help you every step of the way and provide you with all the knowledge you need to keep your puppy happy and healthy!
At this stage your new puppy will be getting familiar with their new surroundings. Make your pup feel welcome with:
- toys to play with
- an inexpensive bed (as he/she will probably chew at this stage)
- Somewhere quiet where he/she can rest undisturbed.
Feeding
- Your puppy will need 3 to 4 small meals a day following the feeding guidelines on your chosen food.
- We can advise on choosing a good quality complete food.
- If you want to change your pup’s food, wait until he/she is settled with you, then gradually mix the new food with the current food increasing it daily for a week.
- Always remember to clean and rinse your puppy’s bowls daily.
- Nutritious treats and chews can be used for training.
- Do Not give bones as they can be very harmful.
Toilet training
- Start by taking your puppy to a particular spot in the garden when they first wake up, after playing and last thing at night.
- Take your pup outside to this spot if he/she shows signs of needing to go to the toilet, e.g. sniffing the floor in a circle,
- Praise when your pup goes to the toilet where you want.
- Accidents happen but it’s important not to tell your puppy off. Clean up well to remove smells so they don’t return to the same place.
Training
As a start your puppy should learn to follow a few basic house rules that the whole family can reinforce and be consistent with to avoid your puppy getting confused:
- No begging or food sharing
- No barking or jumping up at people.
- No chewing unless on a special dog chew.
Praise for correct behaviour, rather than telling your pup off when they get it wrong. Puppies learn faster this way.
As your pup gets a bit older, he/she can be enrolled in training classes to learn more commands and obedience. Ask around for recommended training classes.
Vaccinations
- These protect against serious, life threatening diseases including: Distemper, Hepatitis, Parvovirus, Leptospirosis and Parainfluenza
- We can vaccinate puppies from 8 weeks of age, and your pup will need a second vaccination 2 – 4 weeks later depending on their age.
- We also advise vaccination to protect against kennel cough.
- Booster vaccinations are required yearly to ensure your dog has the best protection possible, a complete health check will be completed at the same time
Worming and Flea Control
- Regular preventative treatment against worms, fleas and other parasites is essential for your puppy’s wellbeing, along with human health.
- Left untreated worms, fleas, and other parasites, can cause serious problems for your puppy and some can be transmitted to humans. Infection with Lungworm can prove fatal to your dog.
- We advise on the most effective and the safest products available, that are best suited to your pet’s lifestyle.
- Most shop bought products are ineffective.
- We recommend monthly worming against roundworm until at least 6 months of old for your puppy.
- We offer free nurse worming checks.
Microchipping
- It is your responsibility, by law, to provide suitable identification for your dog.
- They need to wear a collar with a name tag, including your name and address, and ideally our telephone number.
- Micro chipping is the most effective way of identifying a lost or stolen pet, as long as all your contact details are kept up to date on the central data base. It is now a legal requirement of dog ownership.
- Your pup can be micro chipped at the same time as he is vaccinated.
Socialising and Exercise
- It is important to introduce your new puppy to different people, children and other pets to provide them with the social skills needed through life.
- Let your pup get familiar to new smells, sights and sounds in their own time. Never force them.
- It is important to only let puppies meet with fully vaccinated dogs at this stage and don’t let them to walk in public places until 7 days after their second vaccination.
- Pop your puppy into the surgery just to get used to its sights, sounds and smells. It allows them to see the practice in a positive light without having any treatment done, we are always happy to have a cuddle!
- Start taking your pup for a walk 7 days after the second vaccination, you can get them used to a collar and lead before this time.
- Remember to always clean up after your dog, it is an offence not to and you can be fined and prosecuted. It is also a public health hazard.
Dental Care
- It is good to start a daily dental routine
- Get your puppy used to you touching their mouth, and brushing their teeth daily
- Your puppy will have baby teeth until they are around 5 months old
- We can give you tips on dental care, brushing, and available products.
Grooming and Bathing
- We recommend you bath your puppy only when needed, so as not to remove too many natural oils that keep his coat and skin healthy.
Neutering
- If you are not planning to breed from your pup we recommend you get them neutered.
- There are many behaviour and medical reasons why we recommend this and we are happy to discuss this with you.
- Remember neutering prevents unwanted litter
Pet Insurance
- We recommend you insure your puppy.
- You can never predict accidents or illness but being prepared is important, and provides peace of mind.
- Insurance companies will pay vets bills for the owner who will pay monthly or annual premiums. There will be an excess for you to pay.
- We advise you opt for a policy that covers your pet for life. Some policies do not cover conditions for life.
Pet Care Plans
Here at My Pets Vets we offer a Pet Care Plan for your new pet. This plan allows you to spread the cost of your pet’s routine health care needs over a 12-month period, whilst providing you with a substantial saving.
