There are many reasons why you may choose to change your pet’s food, and there are many reasons why we may advise you to change your pet’s diet too. This can be a stressful thing to do so we thought we would give you some information about how to change your pet’s food successfully.
Any change to your pets food should be carried out over several days, this allows your pet to get used to the change in taste, and allows its stomach to get used to the new food without becoming upset.
It is not uncommon for pets to refuse to eat a new food or to get an upset tummy if the food is introduced too quickly.
On day one add a small amount of the new food to your pet’s normal food.
On day two add slightly more of the new food to your pet’s old food and reduce the amount of its old food slightly to compensate.
Slowly add more of the new food and reduce the amount of old food that you give your pet day by day until eventually you are just feeding the new food.
This should take at least 5 – 7 days; some animals need this change to happen over an even longer period of time.
