LeighRabbits should be vaccinated from 5 weeks of age and then given a booster vaccination every 12 months to provide adequate protection.
We vaccinate rabbits against myxomatosis and rabbit haemorrhagic disease 1 + 2 (RHD1 + RHD2) which are both fatal diseases present in the UK that both indoor and outdoor rabbits are at risk of contracting.
We have recently updated the vaccinations that we offer in line with the latest guidance and now recommend giving Yurvac alongside the standard Nobivac Myxo RHD Plus vaccine. Yurvac protects rabbits against the new strain of RHD2 which has been detected in Europe and has not yet been shown to be covered by the Nobivac Myxo RHD Plus vaccine. This vaccine needs to be given at least 2 weeks either side of the standard vaccination so will require a separate appointment, for many patients this will be a good opportunity for an additional health check!
Research into these diseases is ongoing so this advice will be kept up to date in line with the latest recommendations, more information on rabbit vaccinations can be found on the RWAF website: https://rabbitwelfare.co.uk/vaccines/
Our vets are happy to discuss rabbit vaccinations in a routine health check if you have any further questions or concerns!
